DINA calls for public input on removal of 24 trees; deadline June 3
A Nowell Creek developer requested to remove 24 mature and protected trees along Daniel Island Drive and replace them with 24 rental townhomes, according to the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association in a recent call for the public’s opinion.
That call for the public's opinon was answered loud and clear.
More than 300 public comments regarding the tree removal request were made to the City of Charleston. Shortly after, the public hearing on the tree removal request set for June 4th was postponed as the variance item was deferred by the developer.
The DINA press release had pointed to four key tests needed for a variance approval:
• There are extraordinary and exceptional conditions pertaining to this piece of property (requiring a variance)
• These conditions do not generally apply elsewhere
• Because of these conditions, enforcing the ordinance would prohibit or unreasonably restrict the utilization of the property
• The authorization of a variance will not be of substantial detriment to the public good, and the character of the district will not be harmed by the granting of the variance.
The details of the requested variance can be seen in its entirety "B-2" starting on page 24 on the posted agenda.
More information about the call for public input can be found on DINA’s Facebook page. The Daniel Island News will have additional coverage in next week's edition.
