Cub Scouts take STEM to new heights with firefighters in 100-foot egg drop challenge

Cub Scouts from Pack 519 on Daniel Island experienced an unforgettable night of creativity, engineering, and community partnership during a 100-foot Egg Drop Challenge made possible through collaboration with the local fire department and Ladder 101.

After a month filled with traditional spring egg hunts, Cathy Leeke, Lion Den leader, introduced the idea of an Egg Drop Challenge, giving Scouts a fun and educational twist on the seasonal theme. The concept quickly gained momentum, and Cub Master Matt Levin partnered with the local fire department to elevate the experience – literally.

On April 20, firefighters from Ladder 101 raised their ladder approximately 100 feet in the air, from where each Cub Scout’s engineered invention was dropped while families and Scouts watched below. Using everyday materials like balloons, rubber bands, boxes, padding, and creative designs, Scouts worked to protect a raw egg from breaking upon impact.

Scouts tested their designs and learned firsthand about STEM principles, problem-solving, and perseverance. Some eggs survived the dramatic fall, while others provided valuable lessons and sparked conversations about design improvements.

Following the Egg Drop Challenge, firefighters provided Cub Scouts with an up-close tour of Ladder 101, answered questions, and shared about their work serving the Daniel Island community. The hands-on interaction made the evening even more memorable for Scouts and families.

“Cathy’s creative idea combined with Matt’s partnership with the fire department made this event truly spectacular,” Pack 519 leadership said. “It reflects what makes Pack 519 special. Our adult leaders and parents work together every month to create meaningful, memorable experiences for our Cub Scouts.”

Pack 519 extends sincere thanks to the Daniel Island Fire Department and Ladder 101 firefighters and crew.

Pack 519 serves families on Daniel Island and surrounding communities, providing Cub Scouts with opportunities to grow in leadership, character, and confidence through outdoor adventures, service, and hands-on learning.
