Daniel Island Eateries Are Seeing Green

With classes in full swing and students returning to the Bishop England campus, Daniel Island eateries are seeing an increase in business. Lunch is served from 11:45 through 12:20 at the school and students have the option to bring their own lunch or order from Chick-Fil-A which is provided in the cafeteria. Seniors, however are permitted to leave the campus by foot in order to dine elsewhere on the island. According Bishop England’s Principal, David Held, “About half of the students bring their own lunches while the other half eat Chick-Fil-A, or if they are a senior, leave the campus.”

Interestingly though, the biggest concentration of Bishop England students can be found frequenting restaurants such as Orlando Brothers Pizza, Subway and Moo-Na Lisa after school. Owner of Orlando Brothers Pizza, Chris Orlando comments, “It fills in a slow time for us; I’ve seen a boost in sales between the hours of 3 to 5.” Orlando also adds, “We see a tremendous impact when there are games after school or other after school programs. Having Bishop England so close is a huge asset to our business and we do our best to support them as well.”

John Moran, owner of Moo-Na Lisa says his business has also increased. “We get a few students and teachers in the morning, as well as some parents who are dropping their kids off at school. However, the only time we get groups of students is between 3:30 and 4:30.”

Subway restaurant has also seen an increase in business similar to that of Moo-Na Lisa, welcoming groups of students in the late afternoon, and according to Samir Elzabidi, the manager of Subway, “especially when they [students] have games.”

While Bishop England’s academic excellence is well known, the school’s economic impact is substantial to the Daniel Island business community.
