Ask any owner who has said goodbye to a pet, and they’ll tell you: losing a pet is losing family. But grief does more than ache – it wonders, do pets go to heaven?
It’s a theological and philosophical question with no single, definitive answer, but it’s a question Father Gregory West, pastor of Saint Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, hears often.
“No one can say with certainty that pets go to heaven,” he said. “I instead offer words of hope that we might see them again and encourage people to thank God for having created them and to remember them with fondness.”
The idea of pets in heaven may sound sentimental, but for many, it’s deeply spiritual.
Nearly half of U.S. adults – 48%, according to a 2021 Pew Research Center survey – believe people will be reunited with their pets in the afterlife.
West notes that while the Bible isn’t necessarily clear about animals having an afterlife, “it does say that all creation is waiting to be renewed and made whole. Animals have the ‘breath of life’ (Genesis 1:30) just like we do, and they are part of the world God called good.”
At Daniel Island Animal Hospital, hospital administrator Eve Hosking has seen firsthand how grief often stirs spiritual questions with owners who have lost their pets.
“People aren’t usually looking for definitive answers,” she said. “They seek comfort, meaning, and reassurance. Our love for pets doesn’t disappear when they leave us; their lives matter.”
To honor that love, the clinic displays a Día de los Muertos ofrenda each fall, a shared altar where staff and clients place photos and memories of pets who have passed.
“It honors the pets of our clients and team members who have passed, and has become a beautiful and meaningful way to celebrate the lives of our beloved animals, no matter what one believes,” she said.
“Grief is complicated,” West emphasizes. “When someone has poured years of love and care into a pet, their absence leaves a real void. Even though we can’t say for certain what heaven holds for our pets, offering that hope can be a powerful part of healing.
“I have lost a number of dogs and cats over the years. While I miss their companionship, I thank God for having given me these loving and amusing creatures.”
