Police investigate brawl at Daniel Island Park golf course

Officers were contacted by a Summerville man who said someone pointed what looked like a rife or shotgun at his pregnant wife and himself while they were at the intersection of Seven Farms and Island Park drives.

They described the vehicle as a Ford Explorer that had a broken rear window and contained four to five occupants. Just prior to the pointing incident, the Summerville couple said that a white Ford Escort containing two youths had run a red light and almost struck them, followed by the Explorer, which also almost hit them. Both vehicles sped away on River Landing Drive and eastbound onto I-526 toward Mount Pleasant.

Mount Pleasant Police were notified and apprehended the Escort. Its occupants said they had gone to the back of the golf course that evening to participate in the brawl. However, they decided to leave after encountering a large crowd of youths wielding baseball bats, golf clubs and other implements. They said the Explorer driver, a 17-year-old Wando High School student from Isle of Palms, had transported four or five other youths to the brawl, including an 18-year-old who reportedly brought a speargun and was seated in the rear of the vehicle.

Later that evening, the Explorer owner called police to report that his windows had been smashed. Police said he was initially evasive about how his rear and driver’s side windows had been broken. However, when police told him that they were already aware of the brawl, he admitted that the passenger had brought a speargun to the fight.

The incidents are under investigation.
