Want public transit on DI? Contact your leaders

At the Sept. 9 grassroots meeting on public transit connecting Daniel Island with downtown Charleston and other parts of the region, City Councilman and Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority, Chairman Mike Seekings described a potential plan to have water transit between Daniel Island and the rest of the Charleston area, with microbuses running through Daniel Island to take passengers to and from the dock.

Seekings advised meeting attendees that the best way for citizens to express their desire for transit service is to email our elected officials and research political candidates’ positions.

Many of us have wanted transit options but stayed silent, which may have given our political representatives the impression that there is not much demand for transit on Daniel Island.

I encourage interested Daniel Island residents to follow Councilman Seekings’ advice. To make this easier, some relevant contact information is listed below:

  • Berkeley County Council District 2: Jarrod Brooks (email above).

  • Charleston City Council District 1: Boyd Gregg, greggb@charleston-sc.gov. Also serves on the city’s Traffic and Transportation Committee.

  • CARTA general contact: askcarta@ridecarta.com. Residents can also raise concerns publicly at CARTA meetings.

  • Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments : Go to bcdcog.com/about-bcdcog/staff/ and scroll down to Transit Planning Services for contacts.
