Welcome to our new editor, Caley Smith

Our newsroom is buzzing a little differently since early July. The hum of excitement comes with the arrival of our new editor, Caley Smith.

Smith brings a fresh perspective and a wealth of experience to our publications. She is already making an impact, creating and envisioning new stories and design ideas.

She spent the last 15-plus years honing her skills as a writer and editor at various digital and print publications, and her passion for storytelling is evident.

Most recently and prior to moving to the area, Smith was a news and sports reporter at The Messenger in Madisonville, Kentucky. There, she was instrumental in covering the devastating December 2021 tornado that hit Hopkins County. She deftly and delicately covered the people whose lives were changed forever.

As editor, Smith will organize, manage, and determine the content of the paper and our digital products on a weekly basis. She is committed to maintaining The Daniel Island News’ high standards for accuracy, relevance, and impact, as well as preserving the trust of our readers.

“Local newspapers are a source of credible, reliable news in addition to building social cohesion and building important connections within the community,” Smith said, pledging to uphold those standards.

After graduating from Shippensburg University in central Pennsylvania with her Bachelor of Arts in communications and journalism and a minor in coaching, Smith cut her teeth in a local Patch.com digital newsroom. Since then, she has worked in event planning, marketing, social media, and print positions at newspapers, magazines, and restaurants.

Relatively new to South Carolina, she says she absolutely loves the coastal lifestyle. Originally from Philadelphia, Smith lived in South Florida and Western Kentucky before moving to the Palmetto State with her husband, three children, and a golden retriever. She is a huge Philly sports fan, loves a good cheesesteak, and enjoys spending time outside, baking, photography, and hitting the beach with her family.

“I want to get to know our readers, inform them, and entertain them. I want to make it so they can’t wait to get their paper each week,” she said.

Building on the paper’s award-winning content and design, Smith said, “I plan to bring some more fun and color to our pages as well! I am so excited to be here.”

Join us in welcoming Caley Smith to our community. We look forward to the fresh ideas and perspectives she will bring to our publications, and we are confident that under her leadership, we will continue to provide the high-quality journalism that our readers expect and deserve. Please reach out to her at editor@thedanielislandnews.com.
