What are you committed to?
***image1***Just about a year ago we started writing these marriage minutes. For the most part we have composed two columns a month. That was until around the first of October. That’s when we submitted our last article. We have all kinds of reasons and excuses for falling behind with our initial commitment to the editor. In addition to us both holding down demanding full time jobs; this fall we led workshops at four weekend marriage retreats in three different states. Greg coached the Hanahan High School Girls Tennis team and they made the first round of state playoffs. Our only daughter is a senior and there have been college and scholarship applications to complete. We traveled to see family for Thanksgiving. We could recount more of our personal schedule but you get the picture. Our lives have been busy. Yours may have been even busier. So what’s our point? Life gets busy and we neglect commitments that we initially planned on keeping. We are pretty convinced that business has become one of the major problems in marriages today and we just lose sight of what we were initially devoted to do. We crowd our lives with lots of commitments and we just get busy. Too many things demand our time and we lose focus on how to prioritize our commitments. At about this point you may be thinking, "Yeah, and it only got worse during the Christmas Season." Our point exactly, so we want you to ask yourself, "What am I committed to? Your marriage covenant should be at the top of your priority list of commitments. Those wedding vows you made were full of commitments to love, honor and cherish each other. Are you working to keep up those commitments? We aren’t advocating that you should neglect the commitments you have in your life. We have to go to work everyday too. Our goal is to encourage you to place your marriage commitment activities up higher on the daily "to-do" list. That way if the days don’t have enough hours to get everything done, then your spouse isn’t the one who gets left out of your life. Put call my wife today and tell her that I love her or be sexy for my husband today up above anything else you have on your "must do today" inventory. Take 15 minutes daily to talk, pray, cuddle; somehow spend special quality time with each other. Do not let the multitude of other commitments from this time of year or throughout the new year crowd out your commitment to each other. It is really pretty easy to prioritize. You see, this article got written before we got started on our project to steam clean the carpet today. It is all about what you determine is the most important to get accomplished. Recommit your energies to your spouse this New Year and let him know that he is worth the commitment!
