So you think you can dance? Peace Love Hip Hop brings home multiple awards!
Daniel Island’s Peace Love Hip Hop dance teams have dominated recent competitions, bringing home a stash of new trophies, titles, and awards.
According to founder and chief instructor Angel Roberts, the group has won awards for Highest Overall Score, First Overall Score, Best Choreography, Best Costumes, and Most Entertaining. They’ve also earned multiple “Diamond” and “Platinum Plus” awards.
Roberts, a Daniel Island resident, started Peace Love Hip Hop in 2007 so kids in the Charleston area “would have a fun place to dance freely and be creative with their friends,” stated a press release. “Since then she has grown into a studio where students travel to compete and perform for local events, teaching an average of 600 students a week.”
The studio has grown so much that Roberts added two new instructors, Marcus Payne and Bryant Culler, “to help spread the love of dance to children of all ages.”
Roberts has curated nine teams, ranging in ages from 5 to 19, that travel across the state to compete in various dance competitions. Each competitive student trains an average of three hours a week, taking classes that focuses on technique, tumbling, and choreography.
“A huge chunk of these kids are Daniel Island kids, and we’ve watched so many of them literally grow up in this dance family,” said Roberts. “And since starting right here 13 years ago with just a few friends, it is especially amazing to me to think about where we are now.”
