18th Annual Bishop England 5K is fast and philanthropic

One hundred sixty-seven runners and walkers completed the 18th Annual Bishop England 5K. The eclectic group of runners ranged in age from 5 to 86. The overall male winner was Jay Upchurch of James Island, finishing at 15:55.479. A very close second place went to Daniel Island resident Eric Ashton, less than 3 seconds behind at 15:58.426. Third place went to Daniel Island resident Paul Malek (16:30.179.)

In the women’s division, the overall winner was Beaufort resident Joy Miller (17:49.589). Second place went to Shawanna White of Columbia (19:21.17) and third place to Mt. Pleasant resident Catherine Hollister (20:09.669)

This year’s event had a special twist – it served as part of a fundraiser toward expenses for Bishop England student/runner Abby Johnson, who was diagnosed with Stage II Hodgkin’s Lymphoma last fall. A GiveForward fundraising campaign for Abby, initiated shortly after her diagnosis, has achieved over half of its $15,000 goal; the DI 5k aimed to make a further run for that target.
