Fishing is a great way to spend time with family and friends

For me, Father’s Day and fishing go hand in hand. 

 

My father served in the U.S. Navy for over 30 years. Throughout his career, deployments abroad took him away from our family for months at a time. 

 

It was not until I had children of my own that I came to realize the sacrifice my dad and all military service members make. Months away from your family. Children grow up fast and time together is precious. I am in awe of the people that sacrifice time together in service to our country.  

 

This realization inspired me to spend as much time as possible with my children, Elliott and Maddie. As a young father, the kids and I tried multiple activities. For me, what we did was less important than the time we spent together. Thankfully, fishing became our primary family activity. Today, Elliott and Maddie are adults with lives of their own. Fishing is still central to our time together. Thanks Dad!

 

On Saturday, Elliott, Heather (Elliott’s girlfriend) and Trent Gustafson fished together. Maddie was out of town and could not join us.  

 

We pulled away from the dock at 5:30 a.m. and ran 70 miles offshore in search of a blue marlin. Fishing was slow.  

 

That changed at 10:55 a.m. when a blue marlin crashed the lure on the short rigger.  

 

Trent took the rod. The marlin began jumping behind the boat. Elliott and Heather cleared the cockpit.  

 

It was pandemonium but everyone knew what to do and we transitioned to fighting the fish without incident. Trent did a great job of angling.  

 

In about an hour, he brought the marlin to the boat. It was a good one. After a few photos, we took time to carefully revive the marlin before releasing it. We all let out a cheer when it swam away from the boat.

 

Fishing is a great way to spend time with your friends and family. The Danziger Cup, on Father’s Day weekend, is a great way to spend time together and begin a family fishing tradition.
