It's magic time: Drop everything and go fishing

About this time every year, a sequence of events occurs that makes for the best inshore fishing of the year. 

As the water temperature cools, the number of baitfish and shrimp in the creeks diminishes. 

However, the water is sufficiently warm so that the metabolism of trout and redfish is still pretty high. This makes for hungry predators with less to eat. This phenomenon is happening right now. Don’t miss it. Drop everything and go fishing! 

On Sunday, low tide was in the mid-morning. So, Brody, the amazing fish-finding and stock-trading dog, and I had a leisurely morning. For Brody, a leisurely morning means cheese grits and bacon. Lots of bacon. 

After breakfast, my son Elliott dropped by the house and insisted that we go fishing. He and Brody both said it was the magic time to fish. According to their math, hungry predators with less to eat equal easy fishing with lures. 

We launched the skiff into the start of the incoming tide. Immediately, the bite was on. 

Unfortunately, the bite was from gnats. They swarmed us. 

Thankfully, we found relief after a short run in the boat. Brody indicated it was time to stop and fish by jumping on the front deck and sitting down next to the trolling motor. We were adjacent to a dock with lots of oysters that dropped into deeper water, so Elliott and I figured that was the place to fish. 

Elliott cast a Z-Man Finesse TRD on a 1/6-ounce NedLockZ jig to the oysters beneath the dock. 

Several large redfish attacked the lure. Elliott hooked up. 

In the clear water, I could easily see the school of redfish and cast my lure to them. Boom. Fish on. Doubled up on big redfish. 

For the next three hours, Elliott and I released trout and redfish at a torrid pace. More times than not, we were both fighting fish. It was an epic morning of fishing.   

The magic time will continue until the water temperature drops into the mid-50-degree range. Don’t miss it. Drop everything and go fishing!
