Moore to come!

Rhetta Moore has her work cut out if she hopes to equal her sister’s state championship haul.

Moore is a junior at Bishop England High School and has now played on three state championship teams after the volleyball team won yet another state title last month. She’s collected a gold medal in volleyball and two in basketball.

Her older sister, Mary Harriet, played on six state championship teams during her time at the school. She collected four gold medals in volleyball and two in basketball.

The sisters are competitive but supportive.

“Personally, I hope to at least tie her and hopefully beat her,” said Rhetta, who also plays soccer. “It’s a friendly competition. She roots for me and supports me. But she says she can beat me one-on-one in basketball and in volleyball.”

Moore, like her older sister, has had key roles in her team’s success. She was all-state in basketball last winter and was an integral part of a team that won its 16th straight state volleyball title.

“I like basketball better than volleyball, but don’t tell the volleyball coach,” Moore said. “It takes a little time to get into basketball shape because there’s so much more running involved. I’m a week behind schedule because the volleyball season was pushed back a week because of the rain and flood. I’m starting to feel good.”

Coach Paul Runey said the girls are alike although Mary Harriet is 6-1 and Rhetta is 5-8.

“Rhetta wasn’t that tall until she had a growth spurt the last year or so,” Runey said. “Both are soft-spoken and lead by actions. When you are a good player and get the job done, your teammates tend to notice.”

The Bishops opened the season with two straight wins, 80-19 over Carvers Bay and 50-13 over Pinewood Prep. The Bishops were No. 1 in the state basketball coaches’ preseason poll. But Moore knows it’s how you finish the season that counts.

“We can be the best team in the state if we work hard and play up to our potential,” she said. “We have the talent. We just have to execute.”

The Bishops are 52-5 since Moore joined the team as a freshman. She was on the state championship volleyball team that sported a 33-9 record. She hasn’t been to the top of the soccer mountain just yet. But she will give it her best effort.

“Playing soccer keeps me busy,” she said. “I don’t have a lot of free time. I get a couple weeks off in the summer and then its (travel) basketball. But I like it. It helps me get better.”

Moore, who is a member of the BE National Honor Society, wants to play college basketball at a Division 1 college with great academics. Her older sister is at Davidson.

Rhetta is receiving lots of interests lately from such schools as Bucknell, Cornell, and Mercer.
