Two teens struck on bikes in intersection

Two Daniel Island teens riding bikes through a crosswalk at the intersection of Daniel Island Drive and Seven Farms Drive on May 3 were hit by a vehicle. According to Team 5 Commander, Lt. James Byrne, the collision occurred at approximately 3:50 p.m.

The van that struck the bikers was being driven by a 56 year-old Johns Island woman traveling west on Seven Farms Drive. The cyclists had reportedly crossed over the first half of Seven Farms Drive before stopping briefly at the concrete median in the center of the road, stated Lt. Byrne. They then started to cross again and a truck attempting to turn left onto Daniel Island Drive stopped abruptly to avoid hitting the teens, but a van, traveling straight through the intersection, collided with them.

“The leading bicycle was struck in the rear wheel, and the cyclist suffered minor cuts and abrasions on her leg,” said Lt. Byrne. “The following bicycle was struck more directly, knocking the cyclist from the bike and throwing the bicycle across the intersection.”

Both cyclists were transported via EMS to MUSC. Lt. Byrne further stated that several witnesses on scene reported that the cyclists had disregarded the red traffic signal and the “don’t walk” crosswalk signal when moving through the intersection. As a result, the girls were found to have contributed to the collision, continued Lt. Byrne, and the motorist was not. The only citation issued was to the motorist for not having a South Carolina driver’s license.
